Acceptable Documents

When you apply for an original DL (driver’s license)/ID card in California you must present legal documents and provide your social security number.  Your thumb print and picture will also be taken.

An acceptable document for birth date/legal presence consists of any of the following:

  • birth certificate (certified copy which contains an impressed seal or an original stamped impression with your true full name)
  • Proof of Indian blood degree
  • passport
  • U.S. Armed forces ID cards
  • Certificate of naturalization
  • Permanent resident card
  • Foreign passport or Mexican Border crossing card with a valid I-94

Your social security number will be verified with the Social Security Administration.

True full name verification documents are:

  • Adoption documents
  • Name change documents
  • Marriage certificate
  • Dissolution of marriage documents

Application requirements For All Drivers

In order to apply for a driver license you must do the following:

  • Submit a completed DMV application (DL 44).  Remember that by signing this form you agree to submit to a chemical test to test for the alcohol or drug content of your blood, breath, or urine any time you drive in the state of California when asked to do so by a police officer.
  • Present legal documents verifying birth date and/or legal presence.
  • Provide your true full name.
  • Provide your social security number.
  • Pay the $32 application fee.  This fee allows you to take the test three times and is good for 12 months.  This fee also pays for both the permit test and the driver license test behind-the-wheel.
  • Pass an eye exam.
  • Have your picture taken.
  • Take your thumb print.
